Avraham Burg war Chef der Jewish Agency (deutsche Homepage) (Sochnut), Sprecher der Knesset und für zwanzig Tage sogar Präsident Israels (vom 12 Juli 2000 bis zum 1.August) Als Chef der Jewish Agency war verantwortlich für die Einwanderung nach Israel. Deshalb überrascht es, wenn Avraham Burg in einem Interview mit Ha’aretz sagt, der Staat Israel dürfe sich nicht als jüdischer Staat begreifen und das Rückkehrgesetz, welches immer wieder als Instrument gegen den innerjüdischen Pluralismus in Israel verwendet wird (siehe hier) gehöre abgeschafft:
Avraham Burg, former Knesset speaker and former head of the Jewish Agency says “to define the State of Israel as a Jewish state is the key to its end. A Jewish state is explosive. It’s dynamite.” In an interview in Haaretz Weekend Magazine, he said that he is in favor of abrogating the Law of Return and calls on everyone who can to obtain a foreign passport. Burg, who was interviewed on the occasion of the publication of his book “Defeating Hitler” said “the strategic mistake of Zionism was to annul the alternatives. Israeliness has only body; it doesn’t have soul.” von hier
Damit bringt Burg, der nun französischer Staatsbürger ist, ein heißes Eisen in die Diskussion, wenngleich er ähnliches schon einmal 2003 angedeutet hatte. Im Guardian schrieb er einen Artikel, betitelt mit The end of Zionism, in dem er die Finger in klaffende Wunden legt:
Do you want the greater land of Israel? No problem. Abandon democracy. Let’s institute an efficient system of racial separation here, with prison camps and detention villages. Do you want a Jewish majority? No problem. Either put the Arabs on railway cars, buses, camels and donkeys and expel them en masse - or separate ourselves from them absolutely, without tricks and gimmicks. There is no middle path. We must remove all the settlements - all of them - and draw an internationally recognised border between the Jewish national home and the Palestinian national home. The Jewish law of return will apply only within our national home, and their right of return will apply only within the borders of the Palestinian state. hier
Beide Artikel thematisieren den gleichen Bereich, wie kann der Staat Israel seinen jüdischen Charakter behalten oder, soll er ihn überhaupt behalten? Das dies ein heißes Eisen ist, beweist schon, dass der Artikel innerhalb von 24 Stunden 410 Talkbacks hatte. Einige beschimpfen ihn, andere applaudieren laut ohne jedoch zu beachten, was das eigentliche Thema ist, welches für die Zukunft des Staates Israel von nicht unerheblichem Interesse sein wird, nämlich die jüdische Indetität des jüdischen Staats:
Between the Jordan and the Mediterranean there is no longer a clear Jewish majority. And so, fellow citizens, it is not possible to keep the whole thing without paying a price. We cannot keep a Palestinian majority under an Israeli boot and at the same time think ourselves the only democracy in the Middle East. There cannot be democracy without equal rights for all who live here, Arab as well as Jew. We cannot keep the territories and preserve a Jewish majority in the world’s only Jewish state - not by means that are humane and moral and Jewish. von hier
